GET TO KNOW – Legendary Stylist and Renaissance Man – Phillip Bloch

Phillip Bloch is a name synonymous with fashion. Some of you may be thinking to yourself “oh but I’ve never heard of him” a comment to which I would respond with a slight side eye and forthright reassurance that even if the name is unfamiliar there is pretty much no way in hell you have not seen some of Philip Bloch’s work. He has styled just about every celebrity walking and lent his talents to more ad campaigns than you can imagine. If I were to list all of the accomplishments in his career I would surely run out of breath before I could finish. He has written 2 books, Elements of Style and The Shopping Diet, and many articles for widely read publications such as Elle Magazine and the ABC News website where he also hosts his own segment “Cause Celeb” in which he talks to entertainers and athletes about their charitable endeavors. There is so much to learn about and from Phillip Bloch! In this interview I asked him about his multifaceted career, his advice for those new to the industry and a few questions about weed. This was a fun and memorable interview indeed! Thanks so much to Phillip Bloch for taking time out of his busy schedule to speak with me! For more info on Phillip Bloch check out his official website here and follow him on twitter @phillipbloch. (more…)

GET TO KNOW – FASHION DESIGNER ADRIEN SAVIGNY

I found Adrien Savigny(pictured bottom center in the graphic above) by the grace of Tumblr. I saw a video a stunning video of his collection and I knew I had to get to know this designer a little better and much to my excitement he agreed to an interview! I sent him my questions and while I waited for his reply I was captivated by the beautiful draping in his garments.  I loved the way the fabric caught the light and thought why must these looks only be for men! And of course when I received his answers I was delighted to find that Adrien himself does not limit his looks by gender and feels that they can be worn by both men and women. I am always wearing my bf’s clothes so why didn’t I think of that! Adrien was worried that some of his answers would be lost in translation since english is not his first language but I think he did an awesome job! I cannot wait to see more of Adrien Savigny’s work in the future and wish him well in all of his endeavors! For more photos of Adrien’s work check out his blog here. For one Moment – A collection by Adrien Savigny from Reto Schmid on Vimeo.

FG: What types of fabrics do you most like to work with?

AS: silk satin. for the way it’s reflecting light.

FG: Your clothes are very daring, as a designer do you think its important to push style boundaries?

AG: thanks! sure, it’s very important to keep things rolling. always trying to go further.

FG: Where do you find inspiration?

AS: it could be everywhere : when I m looking at people, or just caressing fabric. This collection is inspiring by the way I dressed every day : an spontaneous association of clothes and pieces of fabric. The collection is pushing this further to achieve a real cloth, not just an association of pieces. Beside this first impulsion there are some recurrent images, taking from Marlene Dietrich’s film (Shanghai Express), the way Josef Von Sternberg plays with light to creat her an aura is brilliant. And there is Lee Hazlewood’s voice, so deep and delicate.

FG: What is the ideal setting to wear one of your garments?

AG: I think the way it is presented in the video.somewhere cinematographic.

FG: Have you considered or do you make womens clothing as well?

AS: sure, i did it when i was working with Paula Immich (http://www.paulaimmich.de), in Berlin. My personal work is first designed for men, but many pieces look more than fine on a woman.

FG: I like to end all of my interviews with a fun question soooooo If you were to compare yourself to a food what would it be and why?

AS: Milk foam, because i like it so much! and hope I am as soft and mysterious as it is.

GET TO KNOW: Fashion Designer and Shibori Master Carter Smith

Carter Smith is a name best associated with beautiful colors and flowing fabric. He is a fashion designer and a master at the art of Shibori. For those who are unfamiliar, Shibori is a technique that uses pleating and tying in the layered dying process to yield complex looking fabric that can be used in a multitude of ways. Carter does not believe in waste, he uses fabric left from creating dresses as scarfs. I am excited to say I am expecting a scarf of my own in the mail soon! I really appreciate that Smith’s designs are worn by women of every age. Having recently shown at Boston Fashion I was delighted that Carter took time out of his busy schedule to speak with Fashionisgreat.com. He gave us his personal advice for the next generation of fashion hopefuls and even told us about his favorite movies. The full interview is  posted below the photo gallery. For more information on Carter Smith and his fine work visit his website where you can browse and shop his design for yourself as well as learn more about this designer, just click here to be taken to Shibori.com. Thanks Carter Smith for the great interview, you have the full support of Fashionisgreat!

FG: Your clothes are worn by women around the world as well as celebrities, is there a perfect carter smith woman?

CS:I tend not to believe that there is a perfect Carter Smith woman as I believe that there is a perfect dress for each individual woman. The object is to find or create the right piece that exposes and supports the beauty of one woman at a time. The dress should not look good on the woman as the woman should look great in the dress.

FG: With so many years of experience in fashion do you have any advice to  next generation of fashion creative?

CS:The only advice I would give in designing is to make sure that you do not ignore the women you are designing for. We can make great personal statements on model bodies but it is of upmost importance that we serve the average woman and work to inhance her image and beauty. Wearing beautiful clothes should add, not subtract to who the women is.

FG: I like to end my interviews with a fun question, what are your top 3  favorite movies of all time and why?

CS: I have to say that Groundhog Day is my favorite movie as it points out to us that it is not what we get out of each day that is important, more that it is what we put into each day that determines where we are going and how we get there. Each day then becomes a new experience and an oportunity to grow. Airplane. I just like puns and  Airplane is nonstop visual and verbal puns. It is a great movie just to laugh through. Maybe I am revealing a little too much of myself here. The Lord of the Rings as I read the trilogy to all of my children as they were growing up and never thought they could take a mythical journey like Lord of the Rings and make it into a great movie. No matter how many times I read it to my children I still was captivated by the journey.

GET TO KNOW: Ray Alex Smith of The Wall Street Journal

Ray Alex Smith is the Style Reporter for the Wall Street Journal, he was also the first ever Menswear reporter for the Journal, which is quite an achievement if you ask me! Never the less after this interview I found that Ray comes across as very humble writer with a penchant for jazz and a love of fashion. Being familiar with @rayalexsmith on twitter for a few seasons now I have seen him tweet off an on about different fashion events and I had a hunch that there had to be some great stories behind all these tweets! So I asked him a little bit about his history with the Wall Street Journal and his favorite memories of covering such a glamorous beat. I also asked his opinion on rules in fashion and who he would invite to a dream brunch cohosted with yours truly. I don’t want to spoil the interview for you but he invited Prince! Obviously the talented Mr. Smith is my kind of guy! You can read the full interview below and if you like you can follow @rayalexsmith on twitter or visit his profile page on WSJ to read his latest work. Thank you Ray Alex Smith for this awesome and fun interview!

FG: How did you get your start writing about fashion?

RAS: I had been writing about commercial real estate for The Wall Street Journal for a number of years and in 2004, I began thinking about giving another beat a shot. I wanted to write about something a little more consumery. I had always admired the work of the Journal’s expert fashion writer Teri Agins and thought it might be interesting to write about menswear. At the time, the Journal was planning to launch a Saturday edition and increase lifestyle coverage. I had a meeting with an influential senior editor at the paper to discuss my potential next career move and proposed covering menswear. The paper liked the idea and covering menswear became my beat. It was the first time the Journal had a reporter devoted to menswear.

FG: How long have you been working with the Wall Street Journal and Do you have a favorite memory of this experience?

RAS: I have been with the newspaper since 1999 – and I worked for the Journal while in college, as a news assistant. My favorite moment covering fashion, that’s a tough one. But some of my favorite moments have occurred at fashion shows. The first few Michael Kors fashion shows I attended were a treat. They were so big and energetic and fun. And he had legendary stars in his audience, not just the hot new young starlet. It was exciting for a newcomer like me. At that point, the other shows I had been to were mostly menswear and much smaller. Another memorable show was the one for the Lanvin and H&M collaboration, held last fall. It was held at the Pierre Hotel in New York City, and it was a very heady experience. Butlers fetched Champagne or scotch on the rocks for you and the models really vamped down the runway, laughing and seeming to have so much fun. It was so spirited and a little bawdy but not in a tawdry way. It felt very “Can-Can”, very old-world Parisian hothouse. It really put you in a good mood.

FG: If you weren’t a writer, what would your next career of choice be?

RAS: I would love to have been a jazz musician if I wasn’t writing.

FG: Do you believe in rules in fashion? If not please explain, if yes what is your #1 fashion rule to live by?

RAS: I think certain rules are helpful. Like the one about buttoning one button on a suit jacket, especially for men. There is a right and wrong way to wear certain things, sometimes it’s just about the little details like that button. Or not having the tie fall below your belt buckle. I find it fun when you can try to do a combination of sticking to rules and improvisation with an outfit.

FG: Let’s end this interview on a fun note! You and I are having the brunch of our dreams and inviting whomever we want both living and deceased. I have already invited Oprah, Stefano Gabbana, Elsa Schiaparelli, and My Mom to my side of the table. Who would you choose to fill your four seats on your side of the table?

RAS: I would choose James Baldwin, he was a big inspiration for me to become a writer, Julianne Moore, Duckie Brown (they’re a duo so I may be hitting my limit) and Prince.

GET TO KNOW: Jewelry Designer and CFDA Member Simon Alcantara

Simon Alcantara is a jewelry designer, former ballet dancer, native New Yorker, proud member of the CFDA and one of my absolute favorite people on twitter! We met over a tweet about the Shaft theme song and have been twitter bff’s ever since! The more I learn about Simon the more I am shocked at how humble he is in regards to his many achievements. Not only did he receive a big break from Patricia Field who first sold his budding jewelry line he also worked with Oscar de La Renta creating runway jewelry and he designed collections for Balmain Haute Couture, that is only to name a few of the accomplishments by the talented Mr. Alcantara. In this interview I asked Simon about his start in the fashion industry, challenges he might have faced and what inspires him to make such beautiful pieces. Of course I kept this interview “Fashionisgreat” while tapping into his fun side by asking about his perfect day in NYC, his ideal imaginary dinner party and what food he might be if he were one. Simon Alcantara is as fun and inspiring as his designs are well crafted and breath taking. (more…)
