NY EVENT: Vivian Maier – Street Photographer Book Release Event with Slideshow Presentation and Q&A with John Maloof 11-18-11

Vivian Maier is street photography’s best kept secret. She was a nanny in Chicago from the mid 1950s to 1990s who always carried along a camera on her days off. Her work would have gone unnoticed if it weren’t for a discovery by John Maloof who happened to buy a box of negatives from a Chicago flea market. Once Maloof started viewing these negative he was compelled to find out more and since then he has been on the search for more information on the woman behind the lens. From what I can gather without seeing this book Vivian was a feminist, with a love of theater who also happened to be blunt and very opinionated, a total Fashionisgreat woman! (more…)

There’s an estate sale this weekend at the New York home of handbag designer’s Kathy Van Zeeland and Bruce Makowsky

This weekend New Yorkers will have the chance to purchase items from the Estate of the Van Zeeland and Makowsky. Kathy Van Zeeland is not what I would call a high end handbag designer but her work is certainly widely available being carried by the likes of Macy’s and QVC to name few. Prior to hearing about this sale I had no idea she was married to fellow handbag designer Bruce Makowsky of B.Makowsky which is also sold in Macy’s and QVC. I am not a huge fan of either brands but I am huge fan of all the cool stuff in their house! Judging from the pictures on the full of surprises website there will be lots of fine antiques, furniture and plenty of handbags up for grabs. There are also two Mercedes and a Mini Cooper that will be for sale.  I hope to make it out to this sale, I almost didn’t want to mention it on here I wanted to keep Full of Surprizes estate sales to myself but I just can’t pass up a good fashion story! Miss Piggy is Officially having a moment, will appear at Opening Ceremony, Musuem of the Moving Image and in theatres this Fall

It has been annouced that Miss Piggy herself will make an appearance at Opening Ceremony on Fashion’s Night Out and when the news hit twitter, the retweets were crazy. I hadn’t seen this much instant buzz in awhile, clearly she is the fashion world’s muppet of choice. It got me thinking,  Miss Piggy has a lot of appearances coming up this fall. I recently saw her at the Musuem of the Moving Image in the Jim Henson’s Fantastic World exhibition. While the fanfare and crowd will be spectacular at Opening Ceremony, if you prefer a quieter setting for your encounter of the pig kind you should definitely check out the Jim Henson exhibit it is nothing short of amazing. Miss Piggy will return to the big screen this fall in the upcoming movie “The Muppets!” that is due November 23rd. This is the most we have heard of Miss Piggy in years and I personally couldn’t be happier! She was always my favorite muppet and any time I wear light purple eye shadow I think of her fondly. So I say Miss Piggy- You better work it honey! Congrats on your moment boo!

Fashionisgreat was here: Big Freedia Live in NYC

If you follow me on twitter you already know I’ve been talkin about Big Freedia the Queen Diva for the past few days and based on the lack of response I got, I guess some of you have never heard of her or Nola bounce in general. Well when shit gets popular I’ma need you to remember who put y’all on. This video is from the Big Freedia show last night and as you can see there was ass everywhere! Shaking, poppin, being tooted up and dropped. Mine included. Whoever said girls who love fashion can’t dance was a liar. Everyone in the building was dancing though, including my boyfriend and that is saying something! We all sweat, we all sang we all had a damn good time! Shout out to Big Freedia who I got to meet before the show thanks to my boo @athegrreat! When I woke up this morning I could not get the bounce out of my head, I am quite sure I was poppin it in my sleep last night.*in my big freedia voice* You already knooooooow! My summer has officially started.

NYC Fashion Films Under the Stars – Monday Night Movies at the HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival

Bryant Park is awesome! When I worked in the garment district I would try to come out the lawn of Bryant Park as often as possible! Thats how pretty is, even though there are lots of people there there is always somewhere to sit and take a little bit of nature in the middle of midtown Manhattan. On Monday when movies the grass opens for picnicking at 5 p.m. and the films begin at sunset, typically between 8 and 9 p.m. Below are my picks for the HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival. (more…)
