“‎Curvy women are real women. Skinny women are real women. Women who have had boob jobs or lip enhancements or liposuction are still real women. Size 0 may make no sense mathematically, but a woman who wears that size is as real as the one who wears a size 16. What makes us “real” people is not the shape of our flesh but our basic humanity. And we lose our humanity when we judge – not when we lose weight, gain weight, or make the intensely personal decision to undergo cosmetic surgery.”

–

Phillip Bloch is a name synonymous with fashion. Some of you may be thinking to yourself “oh but I’ve never heard of him” a comment to which I would respond with a slight side eye and forthright reassurance that even if the name is unfamiliar there is pretty much no way in hell you have not seen some of Philip Bloch’s work. He has styled just about every celebrity walking and lent his talents to more ad campaigns than you can imagine. If I were to list all of the accomplishments in his career I would surely run out of breath before I could finish. He has written 2 books, Elements of Style and The Shopping Diet, and many articles for widely read publications such as Elle Magazine and the ABC News website where he also hosts his own segment “Cause Celeb” in which he talks to entertainers and athletes about their charitable endeavors. There is so much to learn about and from Phillip Bloch! In this interview I asked him about his multifaceted career, his advice for those new to the industry and a few questions about weed. This was a fun and memorable interview indeed! Thanks so much to Phillip Bloch for taking time out of his busy schedule to speak with me! For more info on Phillip Bloch check out his official website here and follow him on twitter @phillipbloch.

Fashionisgreat: To me you are a styling OG. You really put the idea of dressing celebs on the map, and you have been doing style commentary before everyone and their moms became a style critic. How did you get your start?

Phlillip Bloch: Well it all really goes back to being an only child in LI where your fantasy is your best friend & companion though I was very popular and friends with all the prettiest girls in school, which I remain friends to this day. I was always into movies, music, glamour and everything Hollywood – even in my childhood when the big emphasis wasn’t on celebrity & gossip – it was always intriguing to me. I would always go shopping with my mom and a child and help her pick out the perfect outfit for whatever event she was going to. I took a lot of the information I learned on those shopping trips with my Mother and obviously expanded it over the years but a lot of that info was the content of my last book :” The Shopping Diet” by Simon & Schuster. There were 2 pivotal points that definitely turned me from not knowing what i wanted to be to being sure one came from watching Susan Lucci as erica Kane on All my Children and the other came from the movie Mahogany starring Diana Ross – Ironically I had the pleasure of working with Diana ross many times as a stylist & I also recently had the pleasure of Interviewing Susan Lucci right after the AMC finale on my Show “Cause Celeb with Phillip Bloch”

I had a hard time focusing and finding direction in High School as I was not interested in any of the “traditional” core curriculum but after watching Mahogany I was clear on the path on what would interest me for the rest of my life and thanks to the guidance of my parents & teachers they created a special program based on the arts and design which would in fact allow me to graduate high school and go on to fulfill my dreams – and like my heroine Diana Ross & Erica Kane I went on to be a Model in Europe walking the runway for Galiano, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent ect… and appearing in Vogue many times which in turn led me into becoming a stylist, author, actor ectt..

FG: Throughout your career you have held a wide variety of titles from writer, to actor to (of course) super chic stylist, is there a “hat” you havent worn that you would be interested in exploring?

PB: Being a renaissance man, which is a title I learned back in elementary school that always stuck in my mind and I later became one – I would have to say each hat that I have worn throughout the years has been my favorite to wear as I was wearing it… because fashion has always been a true passion of mine the modeling nd styling were extraordinarily fun and fulfilling but I feel that I lived each of those dreams to their fullest, I have gotten to dabble a bit as an actor in films and even had a sarong role in “The Unseen” which is currently on Netflix as a blind abused southern-shut in, with an amazing ensemble of actors. Unfortunately, I have not gotten to expand my role as an Actor as much as I would have liked, as I feel that as a story teller – Acting is the greatest way to tell a story. Currently I am extremely involved as a Producer and Host of my show ‘Cause Celeb with Phillip Bloch” on ABC News Now which combines parts of all of my past to make an extraordinary present. In the show I get to interview many of my celebrity clients and friends about what inspires them in life and we specifically focus on their biggest passion: their favorite cause and/or charity – in the future I hope to expand the Phillip Bloch brand and design a line of affordable yet. chic clothing (of course) as well as other style-centric products such as candles, headphones, accessories & act… I also hope to be able to take my philanthropic to the next level by possibly becoming an international ambassador for a United Nations global inititative – possibly the global aids fund.

FG: While browsing through your body of work I noticed you have worked with pretty much everyone in Hollywood is there anyone who you haven’t styled that you would like to work with?

PB: After taking the last little ebit of Hollywood history by styling Halle Berry for her win as the first African-American actress to win an academy Award and styling Michael Jackson for his final photo shoots for Jet & Ebony magazines – those mounts were both kind of like the quintessential moments there is not much beyond that except maybe a fw other moments I would like to have styled particular people for such as: Kate Middleton, the duchess of York for her wedding – Michelle Obama for the inaugural ball – Maybe I can style her for the next one, I have always been very politically minded and am an avid advocate of the creative coalition. But other than that there arfe very few others that I am anxious to style and help create a fashion moment for. Although I never say never.. I am open and actually hoping for someone to entice me to style them. Although in the past I would have loved to have been able to style Princess Di, Jackie O. and Grace Kelly ..and Farrah Fawcet.

FG: Fashion month is here, do have any special prep to get yourself ready for fashion weeks to come?

PB: My office has more prep to do than I do, I basically just pick which ones I would like to attend..and show up.. My office has to deal with reservations, and busy showrooms and PR Madness.. the only other prep is making sure I am fully rested and energized going into it b/c I know by the end I will be completely overwhelmed and exhausted. In the week leading up to it, I often take a few minutes from each day to start to prepare outfits by popping into my favorite “affordable” stores in NYC to pick up a few accent pieces to spice up my already excessive wardrobe a few of my faves are : Express, Uninqlo, Banana Republic, Zara’s and my new have fashion haunts INA & Fisch for the hip – resale shops (nothing says love like a 100$ Marc Jacobs cashmere sweater) For a few nights leading up to the shows I take a few hours to put a couple outfits together in advance, b/c that way if I am out late socializing after shows I am not panicked early the next morning on what to wear.

FG: Any words for the fashion hopefuls out there?

PB: Dream big but be prepared to work hard. Know your facts and information and be respectful of those that came before you. Stay in your lane and out of other people seats. And it’s FASHION shows not Halloween- leave the costumes at home there is no need to scream when you can whisper – this isn’t a costume pageant.

FG: While on twitter I discovered you and I are part of the same club! The cloudy but happy 420 club. I am relatively new to the fashion industry so I must ask, in your experience would you say there are many others like us? I always thought the fashion crowd was all about nose candy..

PB: Ahh yes, I have been a dedicated member to 420 club from the age of 12 ( after I grew up on Long Island – lol) I think different people in the business have different ways of relieving their stress and anxiety and those that dupe themselves into living the “fabulous” life probably get moire involved with the “nose candy” and other accessories and far too many people get way too deep into the Champagne & Wine (personally, I can’t stand a stupid drunk all up in your face) – which is how I ended up being such a fan and devoted member of the 420 club!

FG: I like to end all of my interviews with a funny question and since we’re already off the topic of fashion I’m just gonna go for it.. On a scale of from one to “Missoni for Target” hysteria how happy would you be if you found out someone named a strain of weed after you? And if you had a choice in the matter what would it look like?

PB: Quite honestly , I would be thrilled to have a strain of Canibus named after me. However, in 2012 I would just be happy if they legalized it! It’s absolutely ridiculous that it is till against the law in so many states, it’s not stopping anyone from doing it- Its just contributing to help fund organize crime and maintaining a prevalent underworld in low-income areas.. I have never seen or heard of any violence being propagated by someone on Marijuana .. I just want a happy meal… and to chi lax.. so get me a front seat and sign me up!
